Medium load handling
Administration and scoring
ADMINISTRATION
Purpose:
The purpose of this work sample is to assess work speed in a medium load handling task requiring lifting to waist and eye level, unilateral and bilateral carrying.
Instructions to the therapist:
Place the bags on the waist level shelf in two rows: one row with the 2 kg bags, and the second with the 10 kg at the back followed by the two 5 kg bags.
Place the crate 5 meters away from the shelf on the floor. The floor needs to be unobstructed between the shelf and the crate to allow for walking and carrying.
Instruct the client to follow the following steps:
Take a 2 kg bag in each hand, walk to the crate and place the bags on the floor next to the crate. Do this two more times until all of the 2 kg bags are on the floor.
Next take a 5 kg bag in each hand and place them on the floor next to the crate.
Lastly take the 10 kg bag in any hand and place it next to the crate.
Now squat down and place two 2 kg bags in the crate.
Pick up the crate and bring it back to the shelf.
Once the crate is on the shelf take the bags out one at a time and place them on the overhead shelf.
Take the crate back do the same with the following combinations of bags
2 kg and 5 kg
2kg, 2kg and 5 kg
2kg and 10 kg
You need to crouch down each time you place bags in the crate and when you place the bags overhead, make sure to do so one at a time.
You may remind the client of the weight combinations as they go on with the sample.
Start timing when you say start and the client starts to move.
Stop timing when the last bag is placed on the overhead shelf.
SCORING
Work Speed Calculator
INTERPRETATION
The calculated value presents the client’s work speed (measured in percentage). The standard for the open labour market is 100%.
When interpreting the client’s performance consider reasons why work speed may be impaired: is it linked to physical ability, cognitive ability, psychomotor ability, or rather a behaviour or task approach. Can these aspects be improved on with further intervention or adaptation of either the environment or the task? Lastly consider whether the client can be considered “qualified” to perform this and similar tasks.
