Bilateral hand use

Administration and scoring

ADMINISTRATION

Purpose:

The purpose of this work sample is to assess work speed in a bilateral hand task that requires in-hand manipulation and tool use.

Instructions:

  • Place the wiring blocks and the wires inside the block in the marked areas and the screwdrivers next to the box on the client’s dominant side.

  • All objects should be close enough to not require a full arm’s reach.

  • Instruct the client to leave the blue transparent caps on the wiring blocks.

  • Instruct the client to follow the following steps:

  1. Unscrew one small screw enough to allow for the wire to be placed in the terminal.

  2. Put down the screwdriver and get a small wire.

  3. Place the wire in the terminal and while holding the wire in place, fasten the screw.

  4. Continue this until all four small wires are placed and fastened.

  5. Then move on to do the same with the three large screws. Note that the large wires are placed on the other side as the small wires and requires the larger screwdriver.

  6. Complete one block, place it in the lid of the box and then complete the other block.

  7. When you are done, place the screwdriver and the second block down and bring your hands back to start.

  • Start timing when you say start and the client starts to move.

  • Stop timing when the client brings their hands back to start.

SCORING

INTERPRETATION

The calculated value presents the client’s work speed (measured in percentage) The standard for the open labour market is 100%.

When interpreting the client’s performance consider reasons why work speed may be impaired: is it linked to physical ability, cognitive ability, psychomotor ability, or rathe a behaviour or task approach. Can these aspects be improved on with further intervention or adaptation of either the environment or the task? Lastly consider whether the client can be considered “qualified” to perform this and similar tasks.
